Description
This statuary is within the Cathedral de Notre Dame in Paris, France. It is called the Tomb of Henri-Claude d'Harcourt. It was created in 1774 out of marble by the artist Jean-Baptiste Pigalle and erected by the widow in 1776. The gaunt d'Harcourt endeavours one last time to rise from the coffin, but shrouded Death holds up the hourglass which has run out, and the torch held by the dead man's guardian spirit standing at his feet has gone out. Even the widow who stands beside her husband's discarded military equipment no longer looks at the deceased but laments herself in prayerful entreaty. It is quite the powerful piece and photos don't do it justice.
