Description
The Ann Street United Methodist Church in the coastal North Carolina town of Beaufort formed in 1778. Next door is the Old Burying Ground site, which can be found on the National Register of Historic Places. This church building was built in 1854. During the Civil War, as Union troops overran Beaufort, the pastor and his family fled the area. The Union troops chose to reside in the parsonage and then utilized the church sanctuary as a field hospital. Many Civil War soldiers (and Revolutionary War soldiers) are buried beside the church. The church sanctuary was later used as a general hospital when the yellow fever hit the area hard. If you're ever in eastern, N.C. consider stopping in the Town of Beaufort. It is quaint and beautiful,. I'm warning you though, you will want to move there. As my retirement nears, my mind wanders there frequently!
