Description
Set aside in the historic Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia is a Jewish burial ground. Pictured here, within the Jewish burial ground is a Holocaust Memorial. At the end of the second world war, when the Szcerkowski family relocated to Savannah they wanted to bring their son's ashes with them. They went to the concentration camp where he fell victim to the Nazi atrocities and found a huge pile of human ashes. Not knowing what ashes belonged to whom, they scooped up what they estimated was about one-third of the ashes of what was estimated to be around 900+ victims, packaged it, and transported it to Savannah as a memorial. As far as we know, here in Savannah, Georgia, USA, we have the ashes of their son and many hundred more poor souls who tragically died. NEVER AGAIN.
