Description
2,961 inches of polished black granite that is one of the most moving experiences in our nation's capitol. You will see tens of thousands of names engraved and at all times of day and night there will be people mourning their lost family and friends. You will see letters, photos, and all kinds of military and personal mementos left near loved one's names along the wall. If I stop to look at a photo and begin to read a letter I'll never make it more than a few sentences in. I can feel the name engraved in stone staring back at me and the weight of their sacrifice pulls tears from my eyes until I'm scared they will turn to blood. I couldn't talk even if I tried. That lump in my throat has seized my voice like time and their nation's call seized those of the names engraved. I walk along gingerly so as to not make a sound. Every step is deafening. This is an experience every American needs to have. And anyone who does not feel the weight of that wall deep in their soul and hurt and weep hasn't yet grasped what it is to be an American or accepted their expense toward the cost of our mighty expensive American experiment. To all the men and women who served, thank you. May God bless America and may we one day be able to stop building such monuments. Until that day, to those who serve, you are heroes.
